Few things are more uncomfortable than waking up to a cold home, especially during a chilly Fayetteville morning. When your regular heating system is not working, there is a simple step that can often provide temporary relief until help arrives. Switching your thermostat to Emergency Heat may keep your home warm until a technician gets there.
At Southern Comfort Heating/Cooling/Gas, this is one of the first things we recommend when a customer calls us with a no heat issue. Here is why it works and when you should use it.
What Is Emergency Heat?
Emergency Heat is a backup heating mode found on many heat pump systems. Instead of relying on the heat pump, which can struggle or fail in colder temperatures, Emergency Heat uses a secondary heat source such as electric heat strips or a gas furnace to warm your home. Because it bypasses the heat pump entirely, Emergency Heat can still provide warmth even if the main system is not operating correctly.
When Should You Use It?
You should switch to Emergency Heat if:
Your home is not warming up
The system is blowing cool or lukewarm air
Your heat pump is malfunctioning or frozen
Outdoor temperatures are especially cold
Emergency Heat is not designed for everyday use, but it is very helpful when your primary heating system is not working and you need quick comfort.
How to Turn It On
Most thermostats have a clearly labeled Emergency Heat or EM Heat setting. Simply change your system from Heat to Emergency Heat and allow some time for the system to begin warming the home.
If you are unsure how to activate this setting, our team is happy to guide you over the phone.
A Friendly Reminder
Emergency Heat typically uses more energy than standard heating, so it should be used as a temporary solution. Once your home is comfortable, it is important to have a professional inspect and repair the system.
